Assistant for Special Events
Position Length: August 1, 2008 – November 15, 2008
Position
The Healthy Schools Campaign is seeking a short term, full time Assistant for Special Events to support the organization’s Cooking up Change Healthy Cooking Contest and annual benefit. The individual will support the cooking contest by scheduling, providing logistical support for and attending a teacher in-service, school visits and the contest itself; preparing and tracking paperwork and assisting schools and other agencies in meeting contest deadlines; proofreading contest documents and other materials; maintaining a contest calendar and communicating with various stakeholders; fielding questions from participating schools and others; and coordinating orders, deliveries and other logistics for the contest.
In addition, the Assistant for Special Events will provide support around the benefit auction. This will include cataloguing auction items; coordinating pickup/delivery of auction items; and preparing displays and other auction materials. This individual must be a strong communicator who is able to effectively communicate in person, over the telephone, in print and via email. Background
The Healthy Schools Campaign, a vibrant and growing not for profit organization dedicated to making schools healthier places in which to learn and work, is an increasingly powerful voice for people who care about our environment, our children, and education. Since its inception, the Healthy Schools Campaign (HSC) has become a leader in addressing issues of environmental health and wellness, particularly in connection to the growing crises of childhood obesity and asthma. HSC believes that all stakeholders—including teachers, students, parents, administrators and school nurses—must have a voice in decisions that affect the school environment.
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree. Strong organizational, communication and writing skills are required. Computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, internet fluency) required. Event planning experience is a plus. Demonstrated interest in nutrition, culinary arts, public health, school health or education is a plus. This is a full time position beginning August 1, 2008 and ending on November 15, 2008. Assistant for Special Events must work full-time from HSC’s Chicago Loop office. During the weeks leading up to the Cooking up Change Healthy Cooking Contest, the Assistant for Special Events will be expected to be available for additional hours.
Compensation
Hourly rate is $12 to $16 per hour depending on experience. (Please note—this pay range is firm.)

Writer & Communications Specialist
Position
The Healthy Schools Campaign is seeking a part-time Writer & Communications Specialist to work approximately 10 hours per week to support the organization’s development and external communications efforts. The individual will research, write and edit grant proposals, reports, electronic newsletters, web content and other materials for audiences including foundations, government agencies, corporations, community advocates, parents and individuals working in schools. This individual must be a strong communicator who is able to write in a variety of styles for different audiences.

HSC believes that all stakeholders — including teachers, students, parents, administrators and school nurses — must have a voice in decisions that affect the school environment. HSC’s ability to effectively articulate its mission, vision and program activities is crucial to the advancement of the organization’s policy platform and its success in engaging a broad base of individuals in these efforts. In addition, HSC must regularly report to the foundations, corporations and government agencies that support the organization’s work.
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s Degree. Very strong writing skills and at least two years of post-college experience demonstrating those skills in a professional environment are required. Computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, internet fluency) required. Because much of HSC’s communication is distributed electronically, the writer should be comfortable with basic HTML and conventions of online communication. Demonstrated interest in public health, environmental health, health promotion, school health or education is a plus. Design skills and familiarity with graphics software (particularly Adobe Creative Suite) also a plus. Writer may work at HSC’s Chicago Loop office or at a home office, and must be available for regular meetings at the HSC office during normal business hours.
Compensation
Hourly rate is $20 to $25 depending on experience. (Please note—this pay range is firm.) This position is permanent part-time and qualifies for pro-rated paid vacation and sick leave after three months. HSC contributes to an employee pension plan through employer matching contributions after one year.
