HSC’s Green Cleaning Standards

Healthy Schools Campaign defines green cleaning programs as those programs that protect health without harming the environment. HSC’s green cleaning program incorporates the following standards:

  • Green Seal, Environmental Choice and US EPA’s Design for the Environment environmental standards for industrial and institutional cleaners

  • Green Seal or Environmental Choice standards for hand cleaners

  • California Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) for deodorizers, furniture polishes, solvents, and other high-VOC cleaning products

  • Carpet and Rug Institute’s (CRI) Green Label Program for vacuum cleaners and certified extractors

  • Green Seal, Environmental Choice, Chorine Free Products and US EPA’s Comprehensive Procurement Guidelines for janitorial paper products

  • US EPA’s Comprehensive Procurement Guidelines for trash can liners and recycled plastic items

  • EPA-registered pest control devices that work without the use of chemical pesticides

Other possible product categories include:

  • Burnishers with vacuum attachments to control dust
  • Untreated microfiber products and accessories
  • Floor mats
  • Hands-free dispensers, bathroom fixtures and lighting

Additional product categories meeting these and other HSC green cleaning standards may be considered for inclusion in the guide on a case-by-case basis. Note that inclusion in the guide does not represent or imply an endorsement of a particular product or company by HSC.
