Why
the "Student Body Challenge"?
|
“Children’s potential for school success
and overall quality of life is directly linked to health
and fitness. Schools alone cannot solve or prevent childhood
obesity, but they can have a positive impact on students’
awareness and behaviors.”
— U.S. Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL) |
Poor nutrition and physical inactivity are taking a toll
on our children’s health. Childhood obesity and related
diseases are on the rise. There is an urgent need to address
the problem in the school setting, where children consume
nearly 40% of their daily calories.
What can schools do to improve student health and
physical fitness?
Right now there is an unprecedented opportunity to help turn
the tide on this public health crisis—if we are willing
to meet the challenge! Thanks to a new federal law,
all schools must establish
wellness policies by June 30, 2006. The law specifies
that parents, among other key stakeholders, must be involved
from the beginning in designing these policies.
Tools for Wellness Teams
This website is designed to assist school teams through the
process of developing realistic, effective local wellness
policies and to share information on successful strategies
for improving student health and fitness. Check out the right-hand
column for free resources designed to help school administrators,
parents, teachers, food service personnel, health and education
advocates and other community members develop meaningful,
effective wellness policies.
Share Your Success
The Healthy Schools Campaign is gathering success
stories and example wellness policies to share with
others. Send example policies and stories to info@healthyschoolscampaign.org.
You can also use the comments box to tell us about what
your school is doing. Be sure to include your email
address so we can contact you to find out more.
