HSC is proud to announce that board member Vincent Iturralde has received a “Natural Leaders” award from the U.S. Green Building Council - Chicago Chapter (USBGC).
The USBG says in its award announcement:
Vincent Iturralde, principal of Tarkington School of Excellence received the Re-Generation award for excellence in environmental education. From his first day on the job, Principal Iturralde, a former science teacher, saw the potential to bring the school to life and incorporate sustainability into the curriculum. Using recycled content for construction, sophisticated lighting controls and a rooftop garden, Tarkington was the first LEED certified Chicago Public School. His commitment is reflected in his students. Students lead the recycling effort and interact with the park grounds around them, learning environmental stewardship and building a sense of ownership in the community as a whole. Principal Iturralde has parlayed a gift of a green school into a green community.
HSC has gained much wisdom and support from our relationship with Principal Iturralde and the Tarkington School. Earlier this year, we even included lessons from Tarkington's success in our national policy recommendations.
Recognition from USBGC is an exciting honor; USBGC is the non-profit organization responsible for the LEED Green Building Rating System, the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings.
