Chicago Mayoral Candidates Discuss Health & Wellness at HSC’s Educational Forum
February 08, 2011 | Written By: Healthy Schools Campaign
On Friday, Feb. 4, Healthy Schools Campaign hosted a nonpartisan educational forum for Chicago mayoral candidates to share their perspectives on health and wellness in Chicago schools. The forum presented a wonderful opportunity to hear the candidates’ positions and priorities related to health disparities, healthy eating, physical activity, recess, First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move initiative and green schools.
HSC was pleased to host this forum and have the participation of all but one candidate. We were also pleased to see so many media outlets cover the event. Many thanks to William “Dock” Walls, Patricia Van Pelt-Watkins, Miguel del Valle, Carol Moseley Braun and Gery Chico for participating, and thanks to Rahm Emanuel for sharing written responses to our questions after the forum.
This wonderful participation and the candidates’ thoughtful responses highlight the increasingly prominent role of school health and wellness in public policy dialogue.
We invite you to learn about the candidates’ views on health and wellness online! HSC’s website includes video excerpts from the forum and responses from each of the candidates to questions about school health and wellness.
Many thanks to Enrique Rodriquez, anchor and reporter for Univision Chicago and member of HSC’s Board of Directors, for moderating the forum. And thanks to the many people who braved Chicago’s winter weather to attend!
