There is nothing like summer time Chicago: the weather, the sights and most of all, the summer festivals! The HSC team headed over to our beloved city’s Taste of Chicago to catch up with the student chefs of Richards Career Academy who won first place in our Cooking up Change Chicago healthy cooking contest. (The team then went on to represent Chicago in the national finals at the end of May.) This week, they presented a cooking demo for their home town! The events took place under the Family Fun tent in Millennium Park.

The student chefs led a cooking demonstration, showcasing their winning Cooking up Change recipe. The team did a great job! They even provided tips to modify their Afro-Caribe Plancha, such as using English muffins instead of pizza crust. They also demonstrated their Soup of Sunshine, which took home the honorary mention for best side dish at the national competition in Washington D.C.

The Family Fun tent was full of activities to enjoy with the kids. Spice House provided spices to create beautiful artworks. They also taught children the origins of different spices. Our friends over at Chicago Truck Farm provided a unique display-on-wheels to teach children about produce.

We are so happy that the Chicago team has found opportunities outside of school and the competition to showcase their talent and passion for cooking healthy, nutritious food! Congratulations on doing such a great job!
