Expert Voices: How Green Cleaning Fits into the School Community
October 07, 2010
HSC has just released our new, expanded edition of The Quick & Easy Guide to Green Cleaning in Schools! As we created the guide, we spoke with numerous experts to gain feedback on what really works in schools today. One of the exciting new additions to the guide is an Expert Voices panel spotlighting practical advice from leaders in the field.
Here, Pat Pizzo, Director of School Facilities & Operations at East Meadow School District on Long Island, N.Y., explains how the green cleaning program has gained acceptance within the school community:
“Through cooperation, a sense of ownership for the program has been developed.
Purchasing decisions are discussed collaboratively with the district’s green cleaning committee. Our green cleaning team, comprised of custodians from several buildings, researches various green cleaning products and methods before making their recommendations.
Green cleaning topics and ideas are frequently discussed at head custodian meetings, vendors are welcomed to demonstrate equipment and products, and head custodians are invited to 'pilot' new products and methods in their buildings.”
