Green Cleaning Spotlight: Western Washington University, Bellingham, Wash.
June 01, 2010 | Written By: Healthy Schools Campaign
Congratulations to Western Washington University!
In the Green Cleaning Awards
sponsored by HSC, the Green Cleaning Network and American School & University magazine, the
school earned the Higher Education Grand Award for green cleaning.
Western Washington University's Academic Custodial Services (ACS) began its green cleaning program in 2000, first by reducing its cleaning products from more than sixty to just three, which were green-certified and used daily. Other chemicals were eliminated over the next three years and custodians began using microfiber cloths and pads for wiping, dusting and mopping.
ACS trains staff twice a year in using products and safety, with the ultimate goal of using only water or dry steam vapor. ACS also revised its vacuum schedule to reflect the amount of foot traffic in each area, partnered with the student health center to encourage handwashing, and reduced waste with a recycling and reclamation program.
