The Healthy CPS Survey Is Here!

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has released its annual Healthy CPS Survey! This survey gives schools the opportunity to report on their current health and wellness initiatives.
This survey is part of the district’s data collection and accountability system that is helping to ensure that student health and wellness are priorities and that school stakeholders understand the connection between health and learning.
This survey captures how well a school is implementing a set of district policies that promote student health and results are reported to the public through a metric called the Healthy CPS Indicator that appears on the School Progress Report. One of the key things a school must do to become a “Healthy CPS” school is implement the district’s wellness policy.
Until recently, most education accountability systems have focused almost exclusively on a narrowly defined set of desired academic competencies. But that’s changing. More and more, states, districts and schools are understanding the link between student health and wellness and academic achievement. By incorporating metrics for health and wellness into its school accountability systems, CPS recognizes this strong relationship and positions itself as a leader.
Whether you’re a parent, a school principal or a community partner, you can help your school on the path to Healthy CPS certification by joining and working with your School Wellness Team. Wellness teams are a key way to ensure that wellness initiatives are being put into action. As a team, you can become familiar with the Local School Wellness Policy, Healthy Snack and Beverage Policy and PE policy, download and fill out the school wellness checklist to see what criteria your school is already meeting and what areas need upgrading, create an Action Plan and identify resources and implement healthy changes.
