HSC is thrilled to announce the release of the updated, expanded and re-designed third edition of The Quick & Easy Guide to Green Cleaning in Schools

Shaped with input from educators, school facility managers, health advocates, school custodians and cleaning industry pioneers, this new third edition provides a new organization that makes it easier than ever to get relevant and detailed information about every step of developing or expanding your green cleaning program.

The guide includes updated information and resources on infection control, sustainability, green cleaning for food service, laundry care, new technologies and more. It also features a virtual roundtable of expert voices on green cleaning from around the U.S. (Stay posted for more updates on the blog from many of these experts!)

The guide outlines five simple steps for developing a green cleaning program, including using green cleaning products and equipment, adopting new cleaning procedures, using green paper and plastic products and involving all school stakeholders in maintaining a clean, healthy school. An accompanying multi-media CD contains comprehensive information, practical advice, tools and detailed resources to help schools learn more and institutionalize green cleaning efforts. The guide includes an enhanced purchasing directory with more than 600 products that meet HSC’s environmental standards for schools.

The third edition was developed with the support of 23 national education stakeholder organizations and 34 cleaning industry corporate leaders following the distribution of more than 90,000 copies of the popular and highly-regarded first and second editions.

“Nationally, we’re seeing a new awareness that healthy school environments are incredibly important to student success, staff productivity and the health of everyone in the building,” said Rochelle Davis, executive editor of the guide and HSC founding executive director. “The  third edition of the guide truly reflects that. It shows not only how simple green cleaning can be but also how powerful it can be in creating clean, safe environments that support health and learning. We’re honored to work with so many leading organizations to bring this guide free of charge to schools.”

In the four years since its initial release, the guide has continued to influence the marketplace and policy environment for green cleaning. The five simple steps outlined in the guide are used as the basis for the American School & University national green cleaning award for schools, and the guide was instrumental in successful advocacy to require green cleaning in all Illinois schools.

Nine states now have green cleaning laws, and school districts in other states are moving toward green cleaning to protect the health of building occupants while reducing schools’ impact on the environment.

Steve Ashkin, president of The Ashkin Group LLC and co-author of the guide, with David Holly, explained that the guide’s strength comes from the diverse coalition involved in its development and distribution.

“What sets the guide apart is the broad involvement it has garnered from both education leaders and corporate leaders in the cleaning industry,” said Ashkin. “The information is practical for schools and practical for the companies providing products to schools. It illustrates how green cleaning is a win-win for student and staff health, for education and for industry. It shows how much sense it makes to take steps to protect health and our environment with green cleaning.”

The Quick & Easy Guide offers an authoritative, easy-to-use resource for getting started or moving forward with a healthy, effective and affordable green cleaning program.
